Training for the improvement of radiological security and physics, and reduction of delays and rejections of expeditions of radioactive material in the Dominican Republic

Radioactive materials need to be transported for use and application either in the medicine or industry as well as for energy production. The Dominican Republic has conceived, as a national regulation, a regulation based on the Safe Transportation Regulations of Radioactive Materials, of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which considers conditions safe for national and international transport, having shown excellent standards of security. However, we have identified cases of physical security violations and cases of rejections and delays of shipments of radioactive material, which turn out to be critical elements in the case of its applications in radiodiagnosis, industrial applications and the treatment of people. To counteract these situations, training has proved to be ideal for agencies that are directly and indirectly involved with transportation. This document shows the experience developed in the Dominican Republic, as a strategy to multiply so that lessons can be replicated in state agencies and private organizations dedicated to transport that have improved the understanding of the problem and therefore also the issue of transport of this type of materials.
