Results of ground follow-up investigations of ten high-interest airborne radiometric anomalies on the Beaufort group in the Carnavon, Victoria West, Richmond and Murraysburg districts, Cape Province

Description

Ten airborne radiometric anomalies which are situated on rocks of the Beaufort Group were investigated in the Carnarvon, Victoria West, Richmond and Murraysburg Districts, Cape Province. Nine of these anomalies occur on sandstone of probable fluvial channel origin and the mineralisation varies in grade from 900 ppm to 9870 ppm equivalent U3O8. The remaining anomaly is unusual since it overlies baked mudstone adjacent to a dolerite sill and has a maximum concentration of 6530 ppm equivalent U3O8. Mineralisation here taken to be greater than 20 ppm equivalent U3O8 at the anomalous sites varies in extent from 10 square metres to 1,08 square kilometres and in thickness from 0,5 m to 7,5 m. However, where mineralisation occurs over relatively large areas, it tends to be sporadic. A subsurface extension of the mineralisation is possible for all 10 anomalies and is considered to be particularly favourable in the case of 3 of the sandstone anomalies
