Quantitative analysis of steel sheet surfaces using computer-aided electron probe microanalysis

Description

The process technology of electron probe microanalysis has been further developed to permit surface microarea analysis. In addition, the measurements and manipulations performed by the microprobe are now process-controlled and automated. The measured data are further processed and displayed by means of EDP. Over the last 10 years at Thyssen Stahl AG, surfaces of steel products, in particular of steel sheet intended for the manufacture of automobiles, household appliances and the like, have been analysed. With the results it has been possible to throw light of these products. The results of the electron probe microanalyses (EPM) of the sheet surfaces have proven helpful regarding the further-processing and service properties. From the comparison with the classic methods it is evident that, in terms of its further development and applications as discussed here, EPM can be ranked among the circle of surface-analysis methods and, in combination with other methods, can better define the composition of industrially fabricated surfaces.
