Studies of the odd-A germanium isotopes with the Ge (d,t) and Ge (d,p) reactions

Description

Differential cross sections and vector analyzing powers were measured at an incident deuteron energy of 16 MeV for the 70727476Ge (d,t)69717375Ge reactions and at 12 MeV for the 70Ge (d,p)71Ge reaction. Generally the data are well reproduced by the DWBA except for the forward-angle analyzing power data for 1/2- transitions in 69Ge. Five new spin assignments in 69Ge and one in 71Ge were made from the vector analyzing power of the Ge (d,t) reactions. A high-resolution study of the 70Ge (d,p)71Ge reaction identified 50 71Ge levels as well as a number of additional states corresponding to contaminants in the target. Some of these states had previously been assigned to 71Ge. Assignments of l/sub n/ were made to 44 levels in 71Ge. Values of J/sup pi/ were assigned to 29 levels of which 17 are new assignments. These assignments were made on the basis of high-resolution analyzing power measurements at 16 and 200. Some of the results of the present work are relevant to the weak-coupling interpretation of 6971Ge by Eberth et al. Some l = 0 and 2 transitions were observed in 70Ge (d,t), although the l/sub n/ = 0 cross-section data are not well fit by the DWBA. The level listed at 0.890 MeV in the A 71 compilation of Alvar is probably not a 71Ge state. A sum-rule analysis was made and results were compared to previous work and to the predictions of the simple pairing theory
