Long-lived radioactive waste minimization in nuclear power systems with closed nuclear fuel cycle

Description
Nowadays nuclear waste problem is not solved anywhere the world, and it is clear that satisfactory solution lays on the way of reducing of risk connected with nuclear waste. On this way in addition to final repository problem solution it is necessary to reduce total amount of nuclear waste, so that means: reducing the rates of cumulating of long-lived dangerous radionuclides; reducing as possible these radionuclides amounts by transmutation. These conditions can be satisfied in reasonable time by burning of minor actinides and, if possible, by transmutation of long-lived fission products. However we can use this strategy effectively if we will design and construct nuclear energy as a system which components are united by nuclear fuel cycle as a system-forming factor. The existing structures and approaches may become not sufficient. Therefore among the initial steps in nuclear waste problem considering must be researches and designs of possible promising structures of nuclear energy. In present paper systems of nuclear energy with nuclear fuel cycle closed by heavy metals are considered and equilibrium amounts of long-lived radioactive wastes are compared. (authors)
