Abstract Calculations are described which show that the important dissipative mechanism in supernova shock waves is radiation diffusion, not ion viscosity. These calculations show that the ion temperature remains below tOO keV for shock energies up to 30 MeV per nucleon, and thus cast doubt on the idea that supernova shocks can be a significant source of deuterium.
