Linearization of inductive transducers used in profilometry of irradiated CANDU fuel rods
Description
Institute for Nuclear Research (INR) by its Post-Irradiation Examination Laboratory performs post-irradiation examinations (PIEs) on irradiated nuclear fuel and other reactor components in the Hot Cells. The data obtained from post-irradiation examinations are used on one hand to confirm the integrity, safety and performance of the irradiated fuel and on the other hand for further progress in CANDU fuel development. The non-destructive examination in the Hot Cells of Post-Irradiation Examination Laboratory includes, inter alia, Profilometry. Profilometry is a step-by-step measurement of diameter along the irradiated and unirradiated CANDU fuel rods using a remotely operable profilometer. The profilometer consists of a vertical fuel rod-positioning machine, a measuring device using two opposed inductive transducers as sensors and a control desk equipped with digitally pulse counters to display the fuel rod position. It produces a diameter profile by measuring diameter along the fuel rod usually at regular intervals of 1.0 mm being piloted by computer. It is possible to measure the diameters of 9 to 17 mm within an accuracy range of ±5 μm. Our inductive transducers are differential transformers with a mobile core. To minimize the measurement error due to transducers' non-linearity, their linearization was made
