Nuclear energy. Past, present and future
Description
The development of nuclear power in the United Kingdom is reviewed. The technical problems met in the Magnox and, later, in the AGR stations are outlined. The present programme of construction of AGR and PWR stations, and the relative merits of the two types, are discussed. A public information programme by the Electricity Supply Industry, the UKAEA and BNFL is discussed and the need to inform and reassure the anti-nuclear lobby on various aspects of civil nuclear power. The fear of nuclear weapons proliferation is also referred to. The ultimate adoption of the fast breeder reactor in the nuclear power programme is foreseen. (U.K.)
