Proton NMR lineshapes of ammonium ions undergoing slow tunneling rotations

  • 1. Institute of Nuclear Physics, Krakow (Poland)

Description

The theory of NMR lineshapes has been outlined for tetrahedral four spin I=1/2 systems undergoing tunneling rotations. Expressions for tunneling Hamiltonian matrix elements are supplied as functions of seven overlap integrals related to symmetry rotations about 4 threefold and 3 twofold molecular axes. Ground torsional level structure is shown to determine NMR lineshape. Experimental proton NMR lineshapes measured at 4.2K for NH4Cl, NH4Br, NH4I, (NH4)2GaF6, (NH4)2AlF6, NH4SCN, NH4NO3, (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6, (NH4)2SiF6 have been analysed and ground torsional level structures are revealed. Tunneling splittings were obtained in most of the cases. (author)
