The risk of genetic hazards in medical applications

Description

The mutagenic action of ionizing radiation in humans is discussed, and a relationship is established between the absorbed dose and the genetic effects. The incidence of mutations is estimated on the basis of statistics. Results of animal experiments (mice) are referred to in order to estimate the ratio of absorbed dose to mutation frequency in humans. The rate of mutations induced per dose unit is a function of the germinal state and of the acute or chronic radiation exposure. Chronic radiation exposure of humans is connected with increased frequency of miscarriages, stillbirths, and genetic damage of the descendants. Diagnostic use of ionizing radiation is a negligible risk to the individual. (BSC/AK)

Abstract (German)

Die mutagene Wirkung ionisierender Strahlen auf den Menschen wird betrachtet und eine Relation zwischen absorbierter Dosis und genetischem Effekt hergestellt. Auf Grund statistischer Erhebungen wird die Manifestation von Mutationen abgeschaetzt. Zur Abschaetzung der Beziehung zwischen absorbierter Dosis und Mutationsfrequenz beim Menschen wird auf Resultate aus Tierexperimenten (Maeuse) zurueckgegriffen. Die pro Dosiseinheit induzierte Mutationsrate ist vom Keimzellstadium abhaengig und von akuter oder chronischer Strahlenexposition. Chronische Strahlenexposition beim Menschen steht in Zusammenhang mit erhoehter Haeufigkeit an Fehlgeburten, Totgeburten und genetisch bedingten Leiden der Nachkommen. Diagnostische Anwendung ionisierender Strahlen bedeutet fuer den Einzelnen unbedeutendes Risiko. (BSC)
