Approximation of the incomplete gamma function; χ2-tests

  • 1. Univ. of Sussex, Brighton (United Kingdom)
  • 2. TRIUMF, Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada)

Description

Approximations, based on the application of ruin theory to pulse pile-up, are presented for the evaluation of the incomplete gamma function Γ(a, x) for a > 1 and x > a; these approximations become particularly useful for a >>1, and hence for χ2-tests in high-statistics experiments with many degrees of freedom, where they are more efficient than the standard method of continued fractions.
