Determination of prices in energy economy

Description

Competition in the energy sector takes place in the form of direct competition between individual suppliers (e.g. the fuel station market) as well as in form of substitution competition. In the area of natural gas substitution competition has a regulating and control function as due to existing territorial monopolies outing of rivals is not possible. But suppliers of heating oil are faced with direct competition as well as substitution competition with other energy sources. Exceptions are here above all areas of the electricity market as well as the prices paid by the electricity industry to West German hardcoal mining. (BWI)

Abstract (German)

Wettbewerb im Energiebreich findet sowohl in Form des direkten Wettbewerbs zwischen den Anbietern (z.B. Tankstellenmarkt) als auch in Form des Substitutionswettbewerbs statt. Im Bereich Erdgas nimmt der Substitutionswettbewerb die Regulierungs- und Kontrollfunktion wahr, da es aufgrund bestehender Gebietsmonopole keinen Verdraengungswettbewerb geben kann. Die Anbieter auf dem Heizoelmarkt sehen sich dagegen sowohl direkter Konkurrenz als auch dem Substitutionswettbewerb mit anderen Energietraegern ausgesetzt. Ausnahmen sind vor allem Teilbereiche des Elektrizitaetsmarktes sowie die Preise, die die Elektrizitaetswirtschaft an den westdeutschen Steinkohlebergbau bezahlt. (BWI)
