Multilayer monochromator
Description
The discovery deals with a monochromator to select a narrow band of neutron wavelengths from a neutron beam having a Maxwell wavelength distribution between 0.5 and 20 A. According to the invention, a flat substrate (eg. boron-free quartz) is suitable upon which numerous parallel periodically alternating layers of germanium and another metal (tantalum, manganese) of thickness between 10 and 200 A was evaporated, were thickness, shape, as well as volumetric and electron scattering densities of the other metal are different to those of germanium. A method to fabricate such a monochromator as well as a special form enabling the focussing of the beam are given. Eight examples for its carrying-out explain the invention in detail. (ORU)

Die Erfindung betrifft einen Monochromator, der dazu bestimmt ist, aus einem Neutronenstrahl, der eine Maxwellsche Wellenlaengenverteilung zwischen 0,5 und 20 A aufweist, ein schmales Band von Neutronenwellenlaengen auszuwaehlen. Erfindungsgemaess eignet sich dazu ein flaches Substrat (z.B. borfreier Quarz), auf das eine Vielzahl von parallelen periodisch abwechselnden Schichten von Germanium und einem anderen Metall (Tantal, Mangan) mit einer Staerke zwischen 20 und 200 A aufgedampft wurde, wobei Staerke, Form sowie volumetrische und Elektroenstreudichten des anderen Metalls verschieden von der des Germaniums sind. Ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines solchen Monochromators, sowie eine bestimmte Form, die es erlaubt, einen Strahl zu fokussieren, sind angegeben. Acht Ausfuehrungsbeispiele erlaeutern die Erfindung im Detail. (ORU)Files
