The Sizewell 'B' PWR - and the relative merits of the AGR
Creators
- 1. Central Electricity Generating Board, Suffolk (UK). Sizewell Nuclear Power Station
Description
In this second part of the article, plant performance is discussed and then output, economics, design evolution and business opportunities are considered. The load factors of the PWRs achieved in 1985 in countries with a significant number of PWRs shows that performance in the United States is not as good as in Western Europe and Japan. However, the 4-loop PWR in the USA has performed better, with Callaway and Wolf Creek operating well. These plants form the basis for the UK design of Sizewell-B. The availability that can be expected from Sizewell-B and a new AGR are compared. The reasons for proposing a PWR at Sizewell-B are based on comparison with the AGR design and are given. (UK)
