Grain boundary corrosion of Al2O3 and Y3Al5O12 ceramics by molten sodium

Description
A corrosion testing of alumina and yttrium aluminum garnet in molten sodium metal was carried out. The grain boundary corrosion was remarkable in the alumina polycrystal at higher temperature. In the yttrium aluminum garnet polycrystal and alumina bicrystal, the grain boundary corrosion little occurred. The relationship between the grain boundary corrosion and the sodium grain boundary diffusion exist, i.e., the grain boundary diffusion occurs before the grain boundary corrosion and then the liquid phase forms at grain boundary and it is removed.
