Postirradiation regeneration of spermatogonia in rats kept under different light conditions
Description
Postirradiation regeneration of spermatogonia was studied in adult rats kept in darkness (DD), constant lighting (LL) or under natural light conditions-12L:12D (DL). After irradiation the rats were kept under the same or changed conditions for 7 to 30 days. The weight of testes, the number of spermatogonia A and B per tubules as well as their mitotic activity diminished. The first sign of regeneration appeared about 2 weeks after irradiation. The repair of postirradiation damage was the most effective in those animals whose lighting conditions had changed after irradiation (from darkness to natural light rhythm). Participation of the pineal gland in the postirradiation regeneration of spermatogonia is discussed. 18 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab. (author)
