Economic damage caused by a nuclear reactor accident

The economic damage caused by an eventual accident in a nuclear power plant consists of the loss of the power plant itself and of the damage caused by radioactive contamination of the environment. In this study twelve accidents have been studied. For eleven of these cases the total economic damage for the Netherlands was estimated to amount to 14-17 thousand million guilders. Only in one case the economic damage could reach 30 thousand million guilders. In this case a strongly urbanized area would be struck by a severe accident and a stringent policy with respect to contamination would be pursued. 6 figs.; 51 tabs
