Fermion mass generation in chiral-symmetric gauge theories

  • 1. Kyoto Univ. (Japan). Research Inst. for Fundamental Physics

Description

The possibility of fermion mass generation in chiral-symmetric gauge theories has been examined by means of renormalization group equations. It is concluded that it is realized only for a particular value of the gauge coupling constant in a possible case. In QCD based on the color SU(3) gauge group an approximate calculation shows that fermion mass generation is feasible only when the number of quark flavors is equal to or larger than five. (author)
