Joint Hot Fuel Process Demonstration JHPD: Follow-on to the KFA-ICT AVR-VI HEAD-END Experiment

Description

The FRG nuclear research center, KFA Jülich, is supporting a program to demonstrate hot reprocessing of low enriched uranium fuel from the AVR high temperature reactor. The AVR reprocessing demonstration will use an HTR-specific headend to produce a feed solution for an LWR type solvent extraction system. Headend processing will be carried out at the KFA-ICT chemical hot cell facility and is designated as the AVR-VI Headend Experiment. Solvent extraction and product purification processing will be done using the MILLI facility of the KfK. The AVR-VI Headend Experiment is part of the KFA supported effort under the cooperative US-FRG Subprogram, SFTD. Program and technical data on spent fuel reprocessing will be obtained for the AVR type fuel which is a Kugel graphite element, single particle, using BISO coated, LEU oxide kernels. The JHPD is being planned as a follow on to the AVR-VI work to provide reprocessing technical data for HTGR type fuel comparable to that obtained for the AVR type fuel. The spent fuel planned for the JHPD is the FSY HTGR graphite element with TRISO coated fissile and fertile particles. The fissile particles have 4:1 thorium-HEU carbide kernels and the fertile particles have thorium carbide kernels.
