On particle energisation by magnetic field line reconnection in extragalactic jets

Description

In order to investigate, whether a magnetic field line reconnection process can be operative in cosmic jets for in situ reenergization of synchrotron radiating electrons, we consider the Gold-Parker mechanism of coronal heating (originally devised for the sun), under the conditions of extragalactic jets. We estimate, that the power dissipated by this process, for the parameter values of two of the most powerful radio galaxies (M 87 and Cen A), amounts to some 1039 : 1040 erg/s. This fits the energetic requirements of the electrons for the radio part of the synchrotron spectrum, but is possibly not enough for its optical and X-ray branch. (author). 41 refs
