Effect of mercury administration on 75Se retention in lamb organs after administration of 75Se-selenite

Description
The application of injectable mercury to six weeks old lambs was found to significantly increase the retention of Se from 75Se-labelled selenite. 24 hours after a subcutaneous injection of the selenite the retention in males was higher by an order of magnitude than in females. The results indicate that in the etiology of nutritional muscle degeneration, not only Se deficiency in diet but also traces of mercury and probably some other heavy metal traces should be taken into consideration.
