Age and support for SMRs as a low carbon energy option: the need for youth-led engagement

This paper explores the impact of age on support for small modular reactors (SMRs) as a low carbon energy option. Limitations of traditional methods of public engagement are discussed. Analysis of a 2019-2020 telephone survey reveals age-related trends surrounding information preferences and support for power generation options, but representative participation in the survey of those under the age of 40 was lacking. While the need for more data collection with younger age groups is apparent, questions remain around what methods of engagement would be most beneficial. This paper presents findings surrounding age, location, support for solar energy and personal knowledge about radiation as predictors of support for SMRs. The results of the survey were contrary to other studies that point to a binary choice between nuclear energy or renewable energy where it is thought that one option tends to crowd the other option out. Survey findings are discussed in relation to the need to enable a youth led engagement strategy for energy policy that can help inform decisions on addressing climate change and the role of SMRs.
