Investigation of the impact of the ash deposit on the environment

Description

The purpose of the survey was to identify and evaluate potential risks arising from the existence of a former ash depot near Olomouc, to which ash from the Olomouc power plant was floated in the past. It was found that the deposit, although located at the meander of the Morava River, in its floodplain, was built in a relatively suitable way, especially in the sense that it was not a valley-type tailings pond, as usual and no significant spread was found. Water contaminated with arsenic in the direction of the hydraulic gradient and the consequent threat to potential risk recipients. Due to the findings, it is recommended to maintain the current form of the dams, including the material stored inside the tailings pond. Dams form a barrier that prevents contact of river water (spilled from the banks during floods) with stored ash. (author)
