Radiation Effects Research Foundation annual report

This is the annual report for fiscal year 1980, which is the sixth year since the inauguration of this Foundation as the Japan-US research institute succeeding the former ABCC. The fields of research at the RERF were expanded, and progress has been made steadily into new areas. Particularly noteworthy are the new studies which aim at elucidating the effects of ionizing radiation on men from the new standpoint of cell level. The Immunology Laboratory newly established in this year and the Radioisotope Laboratory established in the last year are expected to play the leading role in the new studies. Excellent results are anticipated by the operation of the newly installed computer and the ultrasonic equipment enabling image diagnosis without radiation. In March, 1981, a cancer detection workshop was held, and the report is made in the Appendix. The summary of the meeting of Scientific Council of the RERF in this year also is presented in the Appendix. Discussion was made this year among the scientists in US laboratories regarding the reevaluation of existing estimate of A-bomb radiation dose in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The summary of the research activities, the report by the secretariat and various related materials in the Appendix are reported. (Kako, I.)
