Flow with vibrational energy exchange, application to CO2 electric laser

Description

The performances of a continuous wave (CO2, N2, He) laser ionized by an electron beam are calculated. Several types of phenomena are considered: energy exchange processes between molecules of laser medium, electron molecular excitation processes, aerodynamic phenomena: the energy exchanges accompanying the laser effect generate important quantities of heat, which have to be evacuated by the flow. After a survey of the fundamental assumptions on molecular phenomena, a computer code was developed for following, along the flow, the evolution of the thermodynamic parameters (pressure, temperature), of the laser gain, and of the electrical properties (electron density and temperature). To provide a finer description of the last ones, a model giving the energy distribution of the electrons in the laser medium was established

Abstract (French)

On a calcule les performances d'un laser a (CO2, N2, He), a excitation continue ionise par faisceau d'electrons. Plusieurs types de phenomenes sont mis en jeu: processus d'echange d'energie entre les molecules du milieu laser, processus d'excitation des molecules par electrons, phenomenes aerodynamiques: en effet, les echanges d'energie accompagnant l'effet laser degagent d'importantes quantites de chaleur, qu'il est des lors necessaire d'evacuer a l'aide d'un ecoulement. Apres l'examen des hypotheses fondamentales concernant les phenomenes moleculaires, un programme de calcul a ete mis au point, permettant de suivre le long de l'ecoulement l'evolution des grandeurs thermodynamiques (pression, temperature), des performances laser (gain), et des parametres electriques (densite et temperature electroniques). Pour acceder plus finement a ces derniers, l'elaboration d'un modele fournissant la distribution en energie des electrons dans le milieu laser a ete etudiee
