The rate of hydrolysis of zirconium in 1 M NaCl

  • 1. Institut Rudjer Boskovicj, Zagreb (Yugoslavia)

Description

The rate of hydrolysis of zirconium chlorides in 1 M NaCl has been studied at 25, 50 and 750C. Total zirconium concentration was varied between 0.3 and 10 mM and hydroxyl number between 0 and 3. Rayleigh turbidities and pH values were measured as functions of time. Large variations in rate were observed, some solutions reaching a steady state in hours, others requiring years. The rate of change of turbidity is related analytically to (i) total zirconium concentration, (ii) hydroxyl number and (iii) temperature. (author)
