Texture analysis of welded SS 201 stainless steel using neutron diffraction technique

Description

Austenitic stainless steel is a stainless steel type which is widely used in the industry, such as household industry. SS 201 is sold in the market. Prior to characterization, SS 201 plat was cut to a size of 150 mm × 120 mm × 10 mm, then the surface was perforated to form the X-shaped grove (Double V Grove, DVG). The DVG is then welded with multi pass weldment system using Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding method. Materials that have been welded then characterized by neutron diffraction method to obtain diffraction patterns and pole figure in the Fusion Zone (FZ), Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) and Base Metal Zone (BMZ). Pole figure from the experiment subsequently was analyzed using Beartex software to determine crystallite orientation and its strength in all three zones. From the calculated normalized pole figures, it can be concluded that in the FZ the crystallites are oriented tend {110} or Brass type orientation, with an texture index is about 3.12 m.r.d (multiple random distribution). In the HAZ region, the most powerful texture oriented to {110} or Goss type orientation with a texture index is 4.8 m.r.d. In the area of the BMZ, the texture is predominantly oriented to {010} or Cube type orientation, the texture index is not too strong, is about 1.53 m.r.d., In the FZ, (110) plane parallel to the Normal Axis (ND), with the direction of crystallites parallel to the rolling direction (RD) [112]. In the HAZ region, the (110) plane are pointing to the rolling direction of the [001] axis, with texture index is 1.5 times stronger than the FZ. This shows that the (110) plane which was originally oriented toward the [112] on the FZ turned to about 35,26 o direction [001] in the HAZ . For the base metal, the (010) plane leads parallel to the normal direction (ND) and texture lead to the rolling direction (RD) [100]. (author)
