Particles, sources and the reduction formula

We develop the collision aspect of field theory via the external source description by introducing, in the process, particle-emission and particle-detection sources which are localized near the mass shell. By a systematic use of unitary and completeness relations, with respect to the external sources, a physically very transparent and novel derivation of connected (and disconnected) S-matrix elements is given in field theory.
