The stability of precipitates under irradiation

Description

The theory of Ostwald ripening for the case of surface reaction controlled coarsening of precipitates in a metal is modified to include the irradiation enhanced dissolution of precipitates. The modified theory predicts that the mean particle radius is proportional to tsup(1/2), where t is the exposure time. The constant of proportionality involves a dimensionless 'dissolution parameter', defined as the ratio of the rate of irradiation enhanced dissolution to that of thermal coarsening. The limitations of the theory are discussed and suggestions for future work are made. (auth.)
