Value of oesophageal scintigraphy

Description

Beside gastroscopy, barium-swallow and pH-metry, oesophageal scintigraphy is of high value for the examination of dysmotilities, stenoses, reflux and prolonged passage-time within the oesophagus and stomach. Specific images are seen in cases of changed oesophageal peristaltic, decreased volume clearance of the oesophageal mucosa, stenotic lesions and insufficiency of the gastrooesophageal sphincter. In divergent results from endoscopy and barium-swallow the oesophageal scintigraphy gives further precise information for the differential diagnosis; the method demonstrates effects of medical treatment and is also of great value in the follow-up after an operation. Abstract (German)

Die Oesophagusszintigraphie stellt neben der Gastroskopie, dem Bariumbreischluck und der pH-Metrie eine wertvolle Zusatzuntersuchung zum Nachweis von Funktionsstoerungen (Dysmotilitaet, Stenosen, Reflux und Passageverzoegerung) im Bereich von Oesophagus und Magen dar. Sie zeigt typische Bilder bei veraenderter Oesophagusperistaltik, verminderter Volumenclearance der Oesophagusschleimhaut, stenotischen Veraenderungen und Insuffizienz des unteren Oesophagussphinkters. Bei divergierenden Befunden aus der Endoskopie und dem Bariumbreischluck bereichert sie das diagnostische Spektrum; sie belegt Wirkungen medikamentoeser Therapie und dient der Verlaufskontrolle bei chirurgischen Eingriffen.
