An attempt is made to provide a motivation for the study of stellar winds. The theory of steady, spherically-symmetric, coronal expansion according to both the one-fluid and the two-fluid continuum pictures is reviewed. Some similarities between, and differences from, the problem of spherical expansion in classical gas dynamics are noted
