Classification of operators in atomic spectroscopy by Lie groups
Description
This paper reviews the use of Lie groups and the performance and requirements of operators in such aspects of atomic spectroscopy as Coulomb interaction, spin-orbit interaction, spin-spin interaction, configuration interaction and fine structure. A number of orthogonal electron operators are assessed and tested against experiment in Pr III 4f3, Cr IV 3d3, Ni IV 3d7, Ne III 2p33d, and Fe VI 3d24p. The results indicate remarkable agreement. Future experiments involved in fitting further spectral data to theory are outlined. 19 references
