Neutron scattering on biopolymers

Description
X-ray crystal structure analysis, the most important method for structural investigations of proteins and nucleic acids, fails if the biopolymers under investigation do not crystallize. This is, unfortunately, often the case. Scattering experiments in solutions with light, X-ray, or neutron beams may help here. The latter method was not successful until the appearance of nuclear reactors with very high neutron flux. The uses of neutron scattering are demonstrated, in particular, for the case of ribosomal structural investigations. (orig.)

Die wichtigste Methode zur Strukturuntersuchung von Proteinen und Nucleinsaeuren, die Roentgenkristallstrukturanalyse, versagt, wenn die zu untersuchenden Biopolymeren nicht kristallisieren, was leider meistens der Fall ist. Hier helfen Streuexperimente an Loesungen mit Licht, Roentgen- oder Neutronenstrahlen. Die letzte Methode konnte erst reuessieren, als Kernreaktoren mit sehr hohem Neutronenfluss zur Verfuegung standen. Die Moeglichkeiten der Neutronenstreuung werden vor allem an der Strukturuntersuchung an Ribosomen demonstriert. (orig.)Additional details
