Sintering and characterization of ceramics in the zirconium-carbon-oxygen system

Description

The study focused on the sintering and characterization of materials belonging to the Zr-C-O system: zirconium carbide, zirconium oxycarbide and an oxycarbide-zircon composite, with the investigation of pressurized sintering kinetics of zirconium carbide. Newtonian models have been tested: their validity is correct beyond 2200 deg. C. Zirconium oxycarbide and oxycarbide-zircon composite were obtained by reaction between Zr C and ZrO2. The area of existence of the oxycarbide phase has been determined. The sintering of these new materials has been measured by hot compression and is very much higher than that of the initial material Zr C. The thermo-mechanical and microstructural characterization of this range of materials are presented. Oxygen-rich zirconium oxycarbide has a certain interest compared to Zr C (similar thermo-mechanical properties but lower sintering temperature). The composite presents a significant reinforcement of the KIC by zircon, however the other properties (σ-f, Hv, E) decrease. Resistance to the oxidation of carbide and oxycarbide, in pulverulent form, are compared.

Abstract (French)

L'etude a porte sur le frittage et la caracterisation de materiaux appartenant au systeme Zr-C-O: le carbure de zirconium, l'oxycarbure de zirconium et un composite oxycarbure-zircone. L'investigation des cinetiques de frittage sous pression du carbure de zirconium a ete faite. Des modeles de type newtonien ont ete testes: leur validite est correcte au-dela de 2200 deg. C. L'oxycarbure de zirconium et le composite oxycarbure-zircone ont ete obtenus par reaction entre ZrC et ZrO2. Le domaine d'existence de la phase oxycarbure a ete determine. L'aptitude au frittage de ces nouveaux materiaux a ete mesuree par compression a chaud et se revele tres superieure a celle du materiau initial ZrC. La caracterisation thermo-mecanique et microstructurale de cette gamme de materiaux a ete faite. L'oxycarbure de zirconium riche en oxygene possede un interet certain par rapport a ZrC (proprietes tnermo-mecaniques semblables mais temperature de frittage plus faible). Le composite presente un renforcement sensible du KIC par la zircone, cependant les autres proprietes (σf, Hv, E) diminuent. La faisabilite etant demontree, une optimisation serait necessaire. La resistance a l'oxydation du carbure et de l'oxycarbure, sous forme pulverulente, a ete comparee. Elle est faible au-dela de 400-500 deg. C et legerement inferieure pour l'oxycarbure. (auteur)
