Comparison of xenon-CT and cine-CT for regional cerebral blood flow measurement

Description

This paper reports on xenon CT and cine CT measurements of normal regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) done in 12 beagle dogs in order to evaluate the sensitivity of these modalities to unilateral changes in rCBF. Scanning was done on a GE 9800 CT scanner for the xenon CT (two baseline scans and six scans after xenon inhalation) and on an Imatron C-100 scanner for the cine CT study (20 scans, 0.1-second duration, 0.8-second interscan interval after intravenous contrast material administration). The rCBF was determined in basal ganglia, whole hemisphere, and internal capsule. Cine CT showed strong side-to-side correlations (P < .005) for all regions considered. Xenon CT correlations approached significance for the hemisphere and basal ganglia (P < .10) but were insignificant for the internal capsule. Cine CT more consistently depicted differences (P < .01) between basal ganglia (mean, 63.8 mL/100 mL/min ± 6.4) and internal capsule (mean, 45.3 mL/100 mL/min ± 4.3)
