Solid solubility of Ag in YBa2Cu3-xO6+y

  • 1. Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL (USA)

Description

In order to determine the solid solubility of Ag in 123, a series of YBa2Cu3-xAgxO6+y (x ≤ 0.75) samples have been prepared and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis. The solubility limit is marked by the appearance of Ag, 211 and 011 phases. Additional evidence comes from a decrease in the average grain size, a maximum in Tc and Meissner volume fraction, and an increase in the Curie-Weiss term in the normal state magnetic susceptibility. All these measurements consistently set x ≅ 0.06 as the solubility limit of Ag in 123. The effect of Ag on the intra-granular (intrinsic) properties will be discussed
