Description

This document gives a brief description of energy production and consumption in Yugoslavia, as well as an explanation of the Yugoslav nuclear program relative to the country's future and its energy policy. The influence of public attitude towards further construction of nuclear power plants and radioactive waste repository project has gained a significant role in future development of the country. Protection of environment is a primary formal obstacle to the public's acceptance of nuclear powerplants. Economic aspects of energy production and financing of larger projects, particularly those which are connected to the import of equipment and knowhow, are further obstacles of the public opinion. The status of radioactive waste repository project is described with basic conceptual and technological explanations. The repository costs are evaluated and related to the energy production. The efforts to optimize activities in order to shorten the time schedules are described. In the conclusive part of the paper the emphasis is placed to the significance of radioactive waste repository project for future energy and general development for the country
