Magnetohydrodynamics of accretion on neutron stars

  • 1. Illinois Univ., Chicago, IL (USA)

Description

The most part of X-ray pulsars in the Galaxy represents neutron stars with rapid axial rotation and heavy magnetic field, where to the companion substance accretion according to a binary system is performed. The present review is an introduction to magnetohydrodynamics of accretion to such stars, intended for researches interested in numerical methods. Main features, typical of all the types of accretion to neutron stars with a strong magnetic field are considered and then cases of spherically-symmetric accretion and fine accretion disc are more detailly investigated. The reasons, why the numerical simulation of these flows is so difficult are discussed. 35 refs.; 8 figs.; 4 tabs
