Radiochemistry: coal vs nuclear power
Creators
Description
An estimate is given for the radioactivity of the combustion products of a modern 2000 MW coal-burning power station. The discussion covers the following points: 4.6 Mt y-1 of coal leaves 0.7 Mt y-1 of ash to be dumped and 4kt y-1 of fly ash to escape through the stack; particle size of fly ash in relation to respirable range; U and Th and decay products in fly ash, not in secular equilibrium; U and Th in ash, later in re-established secular equilibrium; delayed neutron activation analysis for U in silicates; radionuclide enrichment of the plume by volatile elements; radiation doses to human population through various pathways (U.K.)
