The author points out a shift in public opinion in the industrial countries of the free world gradualy turning against technology. Significant numbers of people fear technologies ranging from microchips to nuclear power. The purpose of the article is to analyse what these new attitudes can tell us about society and what consequences they can lead to. (J.H.)
