Modelling of devitrification kinetics in sintered silicon nitride ceramics

Description
The mechanical properties of sintered silicon nitride ceramics at high temperatures are limited by a low viscous amorphous phase present in the grain boundaries of the crystalline silicon nitride matrix. An analytical model based on an energy consideration of the localized crystallization process was derived to describe the devitrification kinetics of small quantities of glass. Transformation induced elastic stress as well as limitations of the pocket and crystal geometries were taken into account to calculate the fraction of amorphous to crystalline transformation as a function of time.
