Working group report on superconducting magnet for fusion DEMO

Description

Important development issues for fusion DEMO superconducting coil are increasing the magnetic field and current of conductor, as well as increasing the strength of the winding coil structure, cooling structure, and support structure. It is important to promote the development of high-temperature superconducting wire while making compete the improvement of the mechanical properties of Nb3Sn conductor and the development of high performance Nb3Al conductor. The most important items to be accelerated are the development of high-strength low-temperature steel and the study for rationalization of the manufacturing cost of the large toroidal magnetic field coil. The provisional values of development target are ever-experienced maximum magnetic field of 15-16T, conductor current value of 100 kA, and demonstration via model coil of full scale size is indispensable for confirmation of superconducting coil performance. Prior to actual machine fabrication, it is necessary to have completed the development of conductor, structural materials, and insulating materials. In addition, to evaluate the superconducting characteristics at 15-16 T and 100 kA, a conductor test method to evaluate the performance degradation due to the electromagnetic force should have been established. At the same time, it should have been examined to fabricate a central solenoid model coil for DEMO in advance, which is to be used as a conductor test device. (A.O.)

Abstract (Japanese)

「核融合原型炉開発のための技術基盤構築の中核的役割を担うチーム報告書」において、超伝導コイル開発における緊急の課題として、原型炉設計合同特別チーム(以下、特別チーム)の体制を強化し、超伝導コイルシステム概念設計の基本設計にも着手することが示されている。特別チームでは、原型炉超伝導コイル概念構築のために設計強度、大型コイルの製作性、超伝導線材の選択などの重要かつ幅広い検討課題に対応すべく特別チーム内外の専門家による「原型炉超伝導コイルワーキング(以下、超伝導WG)」を2015年11月に設置し、活動を開始した。超伝導WGでは、原型炉用超伝導コイルの基本概念の構築ならびに今後の開発方針の作成を目的に、原型炉用超伝導コイルの主要課題項目を中心に各専門家から情報提供を受け検討を行い、本報告書は、超伝導WGの2015年11月から2016年5月までの活動内容を纏めたものである。(著者)
