Compact tension specimen preparation out of CANDU pressure tube using the numerical controlled milling machine

  • 1. Institute for Nuclear Research, Pitesti (Romania)

Description

Compact tension (CT) specimens are used extensively in the area fracture mechanics and corrosion testing, in order to establish fracture toughness values for a material. This paper presents the method used to prepare the CT specimens out of non-irradiated CANDU pressure tube samples for mechanical tests. For sample preparation a DM 1007 Dyna numerically controlled milling machine is used. This milling machine will be installed into a heavy concrete hot cell and will be used to prepare CT specimens out of irradiated CANDU pressure tube samples. These specimens will be further used in mechanical tests for the determination of the threshold stress intensity factor (KIH) and the delayed hydride cracking (DHC). (authors)
