Description

In this paper the mathematical simulation of radiation transport in the matter is used to evaluate and optimize an X-ray system for cultural heritage studies. To perform the simulations the MCNPX code system based on the Monte Carlo method was used taking into account all the characteristics of the experimental facility. Varying parameters, such as the painting-source-detector geometry and the source's emission spectrum, the profiles and images of two different test paintings were obtained and analyzed. The most suitable experimental configuration to carry out energy-resolved radiography of art objects was identified. It was established that with the proposed system is feasible to perform the analysis of paintings containing a lead white ground layer with a thickness less than 20 microns. (Author)
