Description

The main function of burnable venom is to reduce excess reactivity early in the reactor cycle. There are several benefits of implementing them in the core of a nuclear reactor. Among them we can highlight: the possibility of increasing the load of fissile material, lengthening the reactor cycle; improve safety margins by reducing excess reactivity throughout the cycle; and a more even power distribution if venom are strategically placed, thereby reducing power peaks. This work seeks to optimize, from the neutron point of view, the burnable venom present in the fuel elements of the RA-10 reactor. It is understood as optimal that the decrease in the reactivity in excess to the replacement burn, caused by the presence of the venom at that moment, does not penalize the length of the cycle. The burnable venom of the RA-10 reactor are natural Cadmium and have a thin wire geometry with a circular section. In the present work, a parametric study of the radius of said Cadmium wires is carried out in search of the radius that provides optimal venoms behavior. For this, two-dimensional models of the fuel element of the RA-10 are made, using the CONDOR v2.61 and Serpent v2.1.25 neutron calculation codes as a tool. Finally, a three-dimensional modeling of the fuel element is carried out in Serpent, and the possibility of an optimal configuration in which the Cadmium wires have, in discrete form, different diameters along their axial axis is evaluated. Abstract (Spanish)
