Announcement of a recommendation of the SSK (German Radiation Protection Commission)

The SSK recommends the following: 1) The effective dose received through ingestion of milk or meat contaminated with Cs-134 and Cs-137 is negligibly small (0.05-0.15 mSv, or 5-15 mrem). In Southern Germany (as e.g. in the Tuebingen area, in Suebia, Lower and Upper Bavaria) the environmental exposure is higher, so that there, appropriate measures have to be taken with regard to animal feed and other processes in the food chain. 2) One should be very careful with mushrooms, especially cepes, collected in Southern Germany. 3) As to fresh water fish or seafish, normal amounts ingested will not lead to enhanced radiation exposure. 4) Despite the fact that game or venison from Southern Germany contains relatively high amounts of Cesium isotopes, the resulting effective dose received is negligibly small. Ingestion of 200 g of game with 1000 Bq Cs/kg will administer a dose of 0.003 mSv (0.3 mrem). (HP)
