Nb-Ga-Cu system

Description

The microstructure and phase composition of cast and annealed alloys were studied and the isothermal cross section of the state diagram at 800 deg C was constructed with the aim of investigating alloys of the Nb-Ga-Cu system possessing superconducting properties. The triple sigma-phase of Nb2CuGa with a tetragonal structure was detected, the existence of Laves' hexagonal phase NbCuGa was confirmed, the lattice parameters and the homogeneity regions of the triple phases were determined. It is shown that alloying Nb-Ga alloys with copper reduces the temperature of transition to the superconducting state and does not improve the mechanical properties. In the triple system, superconductivity at temperatures exceeding 4.2 K is exhibited by a solid solution based on the compound Nb3Ga
