Nucleation of crystals in amorphous materials
- 1. Kinki Univ., Higashi-Osaka, Osaka (Japan). Research Inst. for Science and Technology
Description
Electron microscope studies have been carried out on the nucleation process of crystals in amorphous materials with the following results: (a) The nucleus size, about φ3 nm, coincides with the critical size of crystals for amorphization in a Ni-50 at%Ti alloy. (b) The primary crystals in amorphous Al2O3-ZrO2 systems are always ZrO2 ones, and their nucleus size, about φ5 nm, is not sensitive to both annealing temperature and chemical composition. (c) Crystallization temperature takes the maximum value at the eutectic composition in Am-Al2O3-ZrO2 systems. The results are discussed in terms of embedded atom clusters. (author)
