Nonvanishing cross section for the reaction π + N → (π+π) + N at t = 0

Description
It is shown from experimental data that the extrapolated cross section for the reaction π⁻p→π⁻π⁺n at 2.3 GeV/c is not only nonzero at t=0, but negative. This is in contrast with higher-energy results where the cross section at t=0 is positive. One-pion-exchange calculations modified by absorptive corrections give results in general agreement with these experiments.
