Description

Characteristics of polycarbosilane (PCS) type SiC/Al composite after thermal treatment and neutron irradiation were investigated. The objectives of this investigation are to evaluate the potential of the SiC/Al composite as low activation fusion reactor material and to develop it for fusion reactor applications. Mechanical properties were measured by tensile test and three point bending test. Microstructures were inspected by means of SEM and TEM. The effects of thermal treatment was studied and degradation mechanisms have been proposed. The effects of neutron irradiation were studied using fission neutrons from JOYO and JMTR and with 14 MeV neutrons from RTNS-II. The SiC/Al composite and SiC fiber showed excellent stability under neutron irradiations. Increments of tensile strength and Young's modulus were observed by irradiation in FBR (JOYO). (author)
